Role of Government to Eradicate the Poverty

The term poverty refers to the state of people who live below an adequate standard of living. This means that the quality of life for such individuals is poor and their economic, social and political conditions are more or less like those among the wretched members in a society (Laudan 15). Eradication of poverty is one issue that enjoys utmost priority by different governments across the world. Poverty can be attributed to various factors some of which may include unemployment, low wages and human rights violation (Poverty 25). The government has a role to play in eradicating poverty through provision of employment opportunities and encouragement of growth and modernization within the economy. By doing so, it will be possible to provide income opportunities resulting into reduction in unemployment levels hence eradication of poverty (Hossain 44). Additionally, the government has a role to play in eradicating poverty through facilitation of economic growth. This will lead to an increase in income levels among individuals resulting into reduction in unemployment levels hence reduction in poverty (Dasgupta 745).

On the other hand, the government has also played significant roles towards alleviating poverty. This is done by provision of essential services such as education and health care for all citizens within its jurisdiction irrespective of their social status. The key objective for this is to reduce mortality rates hence providing equal opportunities for life to all human beings (Shamim 19). On top of that, proper regulation of labor standards can be done through promotion of fundamental rights at work which will help achieve equitable distribution of

wealth within the country. This will further enhance eradication of poverty (Dasgupta 745).

In conclusion, various factors have been highlighted above as to why it is important for a government to eradicate poverty. It is an evil that can be addressed through creation of employment opportunities and encouragement of growth and modernization within the economy. Eradication of poverty is essential in any society since it increases exposure of individuals to risks associated with unemployment which may include mental discomfort, living standards among others (Poverty 20). In addition, eradication of poverty contributes towards improving living standards most especially by enhancing people’s ability to participate effectively in setting goals and objectives at both national and international levels (Hossain 44
